For many, urban areas represent the center for economic, cultural, and social activity. These areas are unable
to sustain themselves without importing quantities of food, water, energy and other resources from their distant
and not so distant neighbors. In return, much of the waste from these areas - solid, liquid and gaseous - are often
directly or indirectly discharged into the water, air and land which surrounds them. The environmental conditions
caused by these areas pose a potential health risk, not only to those within the city limits but those well outside
of its borders. UDM is developing methods to better quantify and examine the effects of urban conditions on ecological
well-being.
